The CA ProStart Cup is a premier culinary arts and restaurant entrepreneurship competition tailored for high school students in California. Teams, consisting of up to four students, must prepare an original three-course meal within 60 minutes, utilizing only two butane burners. They are evaluated based on various criteria, including knife skills, safety and sanitation practices, taste, and the complexity of their dishes. Notable aspects of this competition include the opportunity for the top teams to earn college scholarships and the chance to represent California at the National ProStart Invitational in Baltimore. The top five teams receive scholarships, while the best team in each category earns the prestigious opportunity to compete at the national level.In addition to the culinary competition, the event features a unique 'Shark Tank' style pitch, where students present their original restaurant concepts to a panel of expert judges. This includes the creation of a comprehensive business plan that encompasses elements such as menu design, a marketing strategy, and a SWOT analysis. The CA ProStart Cup also serves as a significant networking platform, connecting students with over 30 companies and colleges in the hospitality sector. A highlight of the event is the Fresh Burger Battle presented by Habit Burger & Grill, where participants have ten minutes to develop the perfect hamburger topping, judged by the restaurant's R+D and marketing teams. Furthermore, three outstanding ProStart juniors are selected for a year-long mentorship program with a hospitality executive, which includes quarterly meetings, leadership training, and a $1,000 scholarship for college. Overall, this event not only emphasizes culinary excellence but also prepares students for future careers in the restaurant industry, making it a transformative experience for young aspiring chefs and entrepreneurs.
