About
Food IndustryThe ASSBT Biennial Meeting is a notable event dedicated to the sugar beet industry, facilitating the exchange of technical information in beet sugar processing and sugarbeet production. Established in the mid-1930s, the American Society of Sugar Beet Technologists (ASSBT) emerged from the need for structured communication among various sectors of the beet sugar industry. Initially, an informal group, The Sugar Beet Roundtable, was formed by T. G. Guy Stewart, leading to the establishment of ASSBT on January 13, 1938, during its inaugural meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. Over the years, the organization has grown significantly, originally starting with 256 members in 1940, and reaching 633 members from 20 countries by its 25th anniversary. Currently, ASSBT comprises 274 members across 15 countries, representing diverse interests in agriculture and processing. The mission of ASSBT is to promote all aspects of beet sugar research, ensure the dissemination of scientific knowledge, uphold high ethical standards, and collaborate with other organizations with similar beneficial objectives for the beet sugar sector. The primary activities of the society include conducting biennial meetings, publishing the Journal of Sugar Beet Research, and distributing various other publications such as newsletters and proceedings. The upcoming ASSBT Biennial Meeting is set to take place in Austin, Texas, and follows a rich tradition of meetings held across the United States over the past 85 years, which began with the first meeting in 1938.
