About
EducationThe Executive Leadership Academy (ELA) is an intensive yearlong program designed for experienced provosts and vice presidents aspiring to elevate their careers into senior leadership roles, including presidencies. Co-sponsored by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), and the American Academic Leadership Institute (AALI), ELA equips participants with the essential knowledge, skills, and experiences critical for the responsibilities and challenges faced by today's higher education leaders.
With the evolving landscape of higher education, the program emphasizes a multifaceted understanding of institutional operations, covering key areas such as enrollment management, endowment strategies, governmental relations, alumni engagement, and the importance of inclusion and belonging. ELA also addresses the growing need for leaders to navigate regulatory and legislative environments and manage crisis communications effectively.
Central to the program's mission is the commitment to cultivate a diverse pool of candidates capable of leading institutions through contemporary challenges. Participants will benefit from a comprehensive curriculum that includes two seminars held in Washington, DC, featuring current and former presidents alongside specialists in critical educational areas.
These seminars, scheduled for June 15-16, 2026, and June 10-11, 2027, will provide invaluable insights into leadership practices. Additionally, each participant will develop a tailored Professional Experience Plan (PEP) to address personal gaps in expertise, receive mentorship from their current president and the program director, and engage in peer-led webinars and regional activities.
The program aims to foster a supportive community, as highlighted by testimonials from past participants who noted the impactful nature of their learning experiences and the collaborative environment fostered by the Academy. ELA seeks to select approximately 35 participants for the 2026-27 cohort, with nominations coming from presidents of participating institutions, ensuring a commitment to mentorship throughout the program.
CIC, AASCU, and AALI remain dedicated to empowering the next generation of leaders within higher education through this transformative initiative, further supported by fellowships made possible through the generous backing of the Mellon Foundation. Overall, the Executive Leadership Academy represents a vital opportunity for professional growth and leadership development in higher education.
