Slave Dwelling Project Conference

The Slave Dwelling Project Conference, entitled 250 Years and Counting: Reckoning, Resilience, and Remembrance, is set to take place in North Charleston, South Carolina, in collaboration with the South Carolina 250th Anniversary Committee. This 9th national conference aims to delve into South Carolina's historical context, particularly focusing on its Black colonial era scholarship.

The theme underscores the significance of the Black population in South Carolina since 1708, a pivotal moment when they became the majority. The conference seeks to highlight South Carolina's active role in commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution, emphasizing the need to tell a more complete narrative of the state's involvement in this critical period of American history.

Participants at the conference will have the opportunity to engage with a variety of themes, including historic preservation, public history, memory, resilience, reconciliation, and the lasting legacy of slavery. The event encourages presenters to critically examine these topics, fostering a dialogue that reflects on both the past and the ongoing impacts of slavery.

The conference builds on a series of previous gatherings, each exploring different facets of history related to slavery and its repercussions. Notable past events include discussions on preserving tangible evidence of slave dwellings, changing narratives in contemporary times, and the complexities of slavery in both the Northern and Southern states.
