About
TechnologyThe North Star Radio Convention is a premier gathering for amateur radio enthusiasts, taking place at Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn Park, United States. Celebrating its ninth edition, this convention is renowned for its expert speakers and diverse workshops catering to all experience levels. Attendees will have the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and forge new connections with fellow amateur radio enthusiasts from the region. The convention features a dedicated Youth/Newcomer area designed to provide information and activities to guide newcomers into the world of amateur radio. Attendees can participate in the QRP QSO party, where low-power radios are utilized to make contacts across the country and potentially worldwide. One of the highlights will be the Get on the Air station operated by the Stillwater Amateur Radio Association, encouraging both seasoned operators and newcomers to make contacts. This year's convention will showcase several notable speakers and presentations. JB Anderson (K8OS) will return with a presentation on his new Vertical Full-Wave Loaded-Loop Antenna for 80 Meters, building on his previous work presented last year. Other notable presentations include Mitch Ahrenstroff (AD0HJ), who will cover the fascinating realm of amateur satellites, and Brent Petit (WG0A), who will delve into digital modes on both VHF and HF bands. Participants can also look forward to engaging sessions from Colin O'Connor (KE0IYN) discussing the evolution of Parks On The Air activities, and John Kruk (N9UPC) examining multi-mode digital voice systems.Additional topics will include the practical aspects of kite aerials presented by Time Arimond (N0BYH) and Roy Wood (W0REW), a discussion on logging workflows by Dale Henninger (W0DHZ), and an introduction to decentralized mesh communication by Rick Collins (KU5MC). Other speakers will cover a range of topics from antenna modeling, the use of NanoVNA in measurements, to exploring 3D printing in amateur radio. The convention is designed not only for learning but also for hands-on experiences, including transmitter hunts and various contests, making it an enriching experience for all participants. With a mix of practical sessions, expert talks, and opportunities to engage with fellow enthusiasts, the North Star Radio Convention promises to be a valuable event for anyone involved in amateur radio.
