JAILCON Southern Regional Conference

The JAILCON Southern Regional Conference, held in Mobile, is an important event dedicated to recognizing individuals in the corrections field for their exceptional contributions and dedication. The conference features the prestigious JAILCON Awards Ceremony, where award recipients are celebrated for their hard work, heroism, and perseverance. Nominations for these awards are encouraged, allowing colleagues to share stories of those who have gone above and beyond in their roles. The nomination process is streamlined through an online application, ensuring that recognizing excellence is accessible to everyone.Award recipients are honored with a beautifully crafted wooden plaque made by inmates at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth. Each award winner is invited to attend the JAILCON Regional Conference with support provided for two agency representatives from the agency receiving the “Detention Facility Award.” Additionally, NIJO offers lunch for a spouse or guest accompanying each award representative at the awards luncheon. The significance of these awards is highlighted by the requirement for all recipients to be present at the ceremony, allowing them to personally accept their awards and be acknowledged by their peers and fellow attendees. The awards presented include several categories that highlight various aspects of dedication within the corrections profession. The Dedication to Excellence Award (also known as the Overworked & Underpaid Award) honors a detention officer, supervisor, or administrator who has demonstrated outstanding commitment over the past year. This individual has gone above and beyond, showing extraordinary efforts to prioritize the safety and security of staff, inmates, and the community. The Detention Administrator of the Year Award recognizes a detention administrator or commander for their exemplary leadership and positive contributions to improving the jail environment. The Detention Supervisor of the Year Award is given to a Certified Detention Officer in a supervisory role who has shown integrity and support for their staff. The Detention Officer of the Year Award celebrates a Certified Detention Officer who has displayed professionalism and dedication to their office and the community, regardless of their years of service. Lastly, the Healthcare Professional of the Year Award and the Civilian Employee of the Year Award acknowledge the outstanding contributions of medical staff and non-certified detention employees, respectively, who have significantly enhanced the efficiency and spirit of professionalism within the facility.
