GEOGRAPHY 2050 is a multi-year strategic dialogue centered on the pivotal issues shaping our interconnected world, specifically focusing on the theme 'Africa Shaping Tomorrow.' This event gathers influential thought leaders from various sectors, including business, civil society, government, and academia, to delve into the profound transformations occurring across the African continent and their global implications. Africa stands as the world's most demographically vibrant region, with significant impacts on global development. By the year 2050, the continent is projected to host approximately 2.5 billion people, an increase from the current 1.9 billion. Over the next three decades, Africa is expected to lead the world in growth of its working-age population, adding around 740 million individuals by 2050. This demographic shift presents unprecedented opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic transformation, which African nations are actively pursuing through initiatives in education, job creation, and infrastructure development.As urbanization accelerates, it is anticipated that by 2050, 60% of Africa's population will reside in urban areas, prompting the development of new models for sustainable city living. Meanwhile, rural areas are also witnessing significant advancements, such as sustainable agricultural practices, efforts to reduce food waste, and ongoing initiatives to protect wildlife and national parks. Africa's vast landmass, which straddles the equator, is home to remarkable biological diversity and a wealth of mineral resources. Despite facing severe climate challenges—while contributing minimally to global emissions—the continent showcases remarkable resilience and innovation. This event is organized by AGS, an institution with a 175-year legacy dedicated to enhancing geographic and geospatial thinking, knowledge, and understanding across business, government, academia, and the wider public. The event will take place at Columbia University in New York, targeting educators and reaching audiences in Nigeria and the USA.
