About
HealthcareThe event titled 'Gait: Functional Gait' focuses on the vital skill of observing and positively influencing a patient’s gait dysfunction, which is crucial for the rehabilitation of both orthopedic and neurological patients. This course builds upon the foundational skills obtained in previous IPA courses and emphasizes the assessment of gait components along with the structural and motor control factors that affect each component. Participants will engage in self-evaluations, partner assessments, and practical treatment strategies utilizing PNF, CFS®, and FM techniques. By the conclusion of the course, attendees will be able to identify the biomechanical principles that govern gait, understand the mechanical, neuromuscular, and motor control impairments affecting efficient gait, and recognize the interrelationship of various body systems required for optimal gait functionality.Throughout the intensive 2.5-day class, participants will develop their manual and observational skills, enabling them to analyze gait dysfunctions in both lab partners and video demonstrations. They will also gain the ability to assess mechanical impairments contributing to inefficient gait and apply CoreFirst strategies essential for achieving more efficient gait patterns. The course includes supervised lab practice sessions where participants will execute appropriate manual skills for treating identified gait dysfunctions. Moreover, they will learn to instruct patients on effective home programs relevant to their gait issues. Each participant is encouraged to partake in guided discussions that center on the latest evidence regarding gait assessment and treatment. It is important for attendees to complete required pre-course work, which includes watching instructional videos, taking quizzes, and reading articles beforehand. The course has been approved for PTs in New York, Illinois, and California, while OTs and PTAs should verify the acceptability of PT approval with their governing bodies. This course is recognized by the BOC for Category A contact hours, and discounts are available for students and first-year professionals. Participants should come prepared with appropriate clothing for lab work and are advised to review relevant materials prior to the course to enhance their learning experience.
