About
EducationThe Frontiers of Democracy Conference, hosted annually by the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University, serves as a pivotal platform for discussing the democratic process, policy, and partnership, especially in light of significant political changes both in the United States and globally. This year's conference is centered around the theme, The United States at 250: Meeting the Moment for Democracy, in the US and Around the World. The event draws upon a multitude of perspectives, including global, historical, and youth viewpoints, as it utilizes the framework of generous listening to explore the intersections of political pluralism, activism, and academia. While this overarching theme guides the discussions, the agenda is diverse and will include various topics pertinent to Tisch College's mission of fostering a robust and inclusive democracy in an increasingly multiracial society. The conference features a dynamic agenda that encompasses concurrent breakout sessions, keynotes, plenary sessions, and ample networking opportunities, alongside an organization and poster fair. Participants at the Frontiers of Democracy include activists and practitioners from public, private, and nonprofit sectors, as well as scholars, educators, and students—approximately 100 attendees in total. The conference aims to facilitate relationship-building among individuals who are actively engaged at the frontiers of democracy, addressing the complex challenges facing democratic governance today. Previous themes, such as those from 2025, which focused on Listening and Leading, have emphasized the importance of dialogue and understanding in overcoming the divisive crises threatening democracy. Moreover, the 2023 edition highlighted religious pluralism and its relationship to democracy in multiracial societies, featuring engaging plenary speakers and a range of highly interactive panels, moderated discussions, and workshops. These sessions are designed to enhance civic skills, explore critical issues, and strengthen collaborations among activists and thinkers, all while promoting the objectives of the Tisch College in nurturing a democratic ethos among young people and communities. The Frontiers of Democracy Conference not only continues a legacy of rich discussions but also reaffirms its commitment to addressing the pressing issues of our time with innovative approaches and diverse insights.
