FOA Professional Development Conference

The FOA Professional Development Conference, presented by the Florida Orchestra Association (FOA) and Florida ASTA, is set to take place at the Hilton Orlando in Orlando, United States. This prominent event aims to attract an audience from across the USA, providing an enriching platform for music educators, conductors, and musicians. One of the key highlights of this year's conference is the presence of Bruce Walker, an Associate Professor of Music at Columbia Basin College and Music Director of the Walla Walla Symphony Youth Orchestra. Walker's extensive experience and notable contributions to music education, including being named the 2021 Music Educator of the Year by the Washington Music Educators Association, make him a valuable speaker at this event.Bruce Walker has made significant strides in his career as a conductor, clinician, and cellist, having collaborated with various orchestras throughout the Pacific Northwest, such as the Walla Walla Symphony and the Olympia Symphony. His dynamic teaching style and engaging rapport with students have earned him recognition, leading to frequent invitations as a guest conductor and adjudicator for prestigious All-State and Honors Orchestras across the nation. Attendees can look forward to insights from his recent engagements, including the 2025 NAfME All-Eastern Orchestra and various music festivals and adjudications in states like Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, and Maryland. Walker's dedication to music education extends internationally, having worked with young musicians in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan through the Youth Excellence on Stage Academy, a cultural exchange initiative.In addition to his practical experiences, Walker is well-versed in conducting techniques, having participated in numerous workshops, institutes, and masterclasses, such as the Marrowstone Music Festival and the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestral Musicians. He holds Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Education and Cello Performance, and a Master of Music degree with emphases in Orchestral Conducting and Cello Performance. Currently, he is pursuing a doctoral degree in Music Education at Boston University, focusing on microaggressions in music education. Outside of his professional pursuits, Walker enjoys exploring the Pacific Northwest, experimenting with barbecue recipes, and collecting argyle socks.
