Flaherty Film Seminar

The Flaherty Film Seminar is an enriching event focused on bridging diverse cultural spheres through communal engagement with non-fiction cinema. Set in Marlboro, Vermont, at the Campus at Marlboro Music, the seminar offers participants an immersive experience over several days, where they will watch, discuss, and debate the impacts and possibilities of non-fiction cinema in our world. The program, which remains undisclosed until the event begins, encourages an exploratory process. Participants will not know what films they will be viewing until the lights dim in the cinema, ensuring a fresh and engaging experience. Film notes and trigger warnings will be provided upon request before each screening starts, allowing for thoughtful engagement with the material.The seminar is designed as a continuum, where individual screening programs are interconnected, allowing for a deeper exploration of themes and concepts. The 71st Flaherty Seminar will feature a rigorous schedule with up to 2-3 screenings and discussions each day, complemented by communal coffee breaks and meals. Participants, including seminar artists, fellows, and general attendees, will engage collectively in daily screenings, active discussions, shared meals, and social events. The thematic focus of this year’s seminar centers on images that resist disintegration, delving into works that excavate what empire and erasure have buried beneath various systems and structures. Through methods such as fragmentation, recollection, and archival intervention, attendees will explore how memory is constructed, displaced, or reclaimed, making the Flaherty Film Seminar a unique opportunity for filmmakers and cinephiles alike.
