Desert Symposium

The Desert Symposium is an annual event that brings together scientists and enthusiasts interested in the natural history of arid lands. Hosted at the California State University Desert Studies Center in Zzyzx, California, this gathering features two days of scientific presentations followed by an exciting two-day field trip. Collaborating organizations, including the Anza-Borrego Foundation, the Anza-Borrego Desert Paleontology Society, and the Anza-Borrego Historical Society, contribute to a rich program highlighting various topics related to the Salton Trough desert.

Participants can expect a blend of oral and poster presentations, with a keynote lecture to set the tone for the discussions. An important aspect of the symposium is the recognition of student contributions; papers presented by students are judged, with awards for the best submissions, alongside an annual grant given to a promising student. The field trips, often requiring 4WD vehicles, are led by professional scientists and provide hands-on learning experiences in the unique desert environment.

Each year, the Desert Symposium publishes a proceedings volume that includes relevant research papers and a field trip guide that aligns with the annual theme.
