Appalachian Breastfeeding Conference

The Appalachian Breastfeeding Conference celebrates its 10th anniversary with a focus on Appalachian Breastfeeding Support in the 21st Century: Building Support & Honoring Culture. This unique and educational event will take place at the Oglebay Resort and Conference Center in Wheeling, West Virginia. The conference spans two days, with the first day dedicated to exploring the historical context of breastfeeding within the Appalachian region, while the second day will highlight current and future advancements in lactation practices. Participants from across Appalachia, including states like Ohio, West Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, are invited to engage in discussions and workshops that address both breastfeeding and the wider Appalachian community.The first day kicks off with registration and breakfast, followed by a welcome address from ABN President Stephanie Hutchinson. Attendees can look forward to a range of insightful presentations, including The WHO Code in Appalachia – The Historical and Current Impact by Stephanie Hutchinson, and personal journeys in breastfeeding, such as Joni Gray's Nourishing Generations: A Personal Breastfeeding Journey and Cultural Perspective. Other notable sessions include Kara Napier’s update on barriers to lactation services, Tenise D. Hordge’s discussion on Appalachian birth and feeding traditions, and Allyson Wessells’ insights into optimizing access to lactation services. Nichelle Clark will also present on the physiological aspects of pumping and the pressures that come with it.The second day begins with a refreshing sunrise yoga session led by Nikki Lee, followed by further discussions and workshops aimed at building support for the future of breastfeeding in Appalachia. Attendees are encouraged to participate in #MilkyMountainStories, an open mic night themed around Appalachian heritage, which may include storytelling, poetry, and music. Additionally, the conference will offer Hair Lights, allowing participants to enjoy a unique experience while engaging with the speakers. Lodging options are available at Oglebay, featuring updated rooms equipped with modern amenities.
